Portland

I am excited to share my next destinations with you. Maybe we will run into each other?

First up, I’m going back to beautiful Copenhagen for Distortion festival and to meet some old friends. I’ll be there from the 30th of May until June, 11th.

And then, I’m going on a little adventure in the Pacific Northwest. On my way, I will visit Vancouver, Seattle and Portland for the first time. Are you living there? Are you around between June 18th and 30th? Let’s meet up! And as always, I am more than happy for any tips and suggestions. Just leave a comment below!

See you soon!

Man I just left Vancouver after beeing there for 4 months.

Go to Gastown, Commercial drive and Main street and E Broadway for lots of streetstyle and coffee shops! Also be sure to check out some of their vintage stores for a lot of awesome americano stuff. Same in Oregon (also no sales tax in Oregon!)

Have fun. Its great up there!

    Hi!

So fun that you’re going to Vancouver. Here’s some stuff to do there.

    Shopping:

Community Thrift & Vintage is great (like, GREAT) vintage.
Erin Templeton is great for her handmade leather bags and vintage.
F as in Frank is good vintage.
Duchess Vintage and Such isn’t open yet but should be by the time you arrive. It belongs to my friend Anna and will be awesome.
Eugene Choo is great for nice clothes.
    Umeboshi is great for shoes.
Gravity Pope is also great for shoes.
Block is good for nice clothes.
One of a Few is also nice.
The Hach is GREAT for all things cool.
Old Faithful Shop is great for home stuff.
Value Village is good for a laugh and sorting through rack upon racks of used clothing.

    Eating / drinking / coffee:

Nelson the Seagull is gorgeous and has good everything
Finch’s is a lovely lunch spot (and I used to work there).
Meat & Bread is also good for lunch.
    La Taqueria has amazing tacos.
Cafe Medina is nice for lunch.
La Ghianda is good for lunch too.
Bao Bei Chinese Brasserie is beautiful from head to toe: the food, drinks, staff, room are all gorgeous (and I used to work there too!)
6 Acres is a wonderful bar, with a great beer selection, great music, good food. Good everything.
The Alibi Room is another nice bar.
Nook is good Italian and a really nice room.
Marche St George is a beautiful family run cafe on a nice sunny corner.
    Gene has strong coffee.
Save on Meats is a newly refurbished vancouver institution. Really good and cheap too.
The Narrow is a loud and fun bar.
The Astoria is fun for messy nights.

If you like Japanese food and things:

Motomachi Shokudo is incredible for ramen and gyoza. Have the charcoal ramen if you’re up for the best ramen EVER.
Gyoza King is fun and open late, and you can take off your shoes and sit on the floor.
    Santouka is good too.
YokoYana is a huhe Japanese dollar store. Seriously I could spend a day here.

    To do:

Walk or bike the Sea Wall.
Go to the beach: 2nd beach, 3rd beach is my fave, Wreck Beach is a super fun nudist beach, English Bay isn’t the best for swimming but has the prettiest sunsets in the whole world.
    Go to the aquarium.
Walk over the Burrard Bridge, on the West side, looking at the mountains. It’s gorgeous.
Walk along Main Street in Mount Pleasant, and go west along 10th Avenue. Has some of the most beautiful houses.
Granville Island is a pretty market and if you go you must have a Lee’s Donut.
    Walk around Chinatown.
Crab Park is lovely for the view.

Scout Magazine Vancouver is good for ideas.

    Have an amazing time!

I’ve made myself jealous of you.

  15. Lauren Mary Fan

    Hey Søren,

Seattle native here, started reading your blog because I wanted to keep up on my northern European fashion after living in Stockholm for a year. What kind of info are you looking for? Fashion type stuff, neighborhood stuff, nightlife, or just all the hidden gems of Seattle?

I love to help out people visiting because I want them to love this city as much as I do. Email me if you have questions.

  19. Lauren Mary Fan

    Here’s a couple for Seattle.

An amazing bar called Bathtub Gin.
    A lovely restaurant called Tilth.

  20. Lauren Mary Fan

Oh also in Seattle, the neighbourhood of Ballard is cool and a restaurant there, called The Walrus and the Carpenter is ace.

  21. Kate

    Soren!

I live in seattle and am around those dates- between Capitol Hill, downtown, and Ballard you’ll see the best of fashion, function, food, drinks, and views- the hills in seattle make it easy to see all of our mountains and water. I’ll make a list!

    cheers-

    kate

  22. There’s a nice stretch in Seattle’s South Capitol Hill that is a totally walkable foodie haven. In Melrose Market (on Melrose & Pine) you’ll find the restaurant Sitka & Spruce, where you can always find excellent Northwesty food, often featuring North African seasonings. If you walk North on Melrose and take a right up Olive, you’ll find the brand-new patisserie Crumble & Flake, which is next door to the unreasonably delicious Rachel’s Ginger Beer brewery and its connected bar, Montana. If you continue up Olive and take a left on Summit, you’ll eventually come to Analog Coffee, which is one of the best coffee shops in the city (though I might be biased — I work there!)

And in terms of fashion, I’ll second the recommendation for Totokaelo, and for Stand Up Comedy in Portland.

  23. Oh gosh, and I forgot to add — next door to Montana is the venerable restaurant Dinette. By mid-June they’ll have their lunch sandwiches. A Seattle summer highlight.

  24. Jess

For fashion, food, and coffee in Seattle look no further than Capitol Hill! In fact, Oddfellows Cafe in the pike/pine area has all of those things at their best. Seriously. Go to Oddfellows. I’m biased (I live here), but Capitol Hill is the best neighborhood.

  25. Hey, I live in Copenhagen now, but I am originally from Vancouver. I can suggest spending time in the area of Kitsilano. I would go to the beach, eat brunch at Sophies Cosmic Cafe on West 4th ave, and finish the night off at Hapa Izakaya on Cornwall and Yew Street for some of the best Japanese bar food you will ever taste! I hope you have great weather, and enjoy the beautiful city!

  26. Hi! I’m living in Vancouver and am moving to Denmark! So would love to meet up and discuss both the places, email me!!

Hi from Seattle! Check out Ballard when you’re in town. Sunday is a great day to visit the neighborhood, as the farmers’ market is on the main drag that day. The Walrus & The Carpenter, Curtis Steiner, The Fat Hen, Besalu, Delancey… Lots of great spots in Ballard.

  28. Elizabeth

I’m heading to Portland + Seattle after Distortion (See you in the airport?)

As far as Portland goes, 23rd St, Mississippi St, + the Alberta Arts District are musts!
In terms of Seattle, Pike Place Market + the gum wall!

If you have time to talk Copenhagen (my second home) while in PDX or SEA, let me know!

  29. We at Isaac Hers love The Locals, it’s a source of constant inspiration! There is a burgeoning indie fashion scene in Portland and it lives in the west end; all of our clothes are made in the US and our patternmaking/design is done in house at the Isaac Hers flagship store. We would love to meet up and show you around the hidden gems of Portland – feel free to email if you have time to meet up, Søren!

  30. Corinne Elise

I’m from Olympia, Washington, and on your way down to Portland, I highly recommend you visit my town! There is an incredible theatre downtown called Harlequin. If you can’t make it, though, Seattle is beautiful in itself. I’d make sure to see the original Starbucks, and visit the aquarium… There are a lot of great Asian restaurants downtown, especially near Pike Place. It’s a wonderful area; I miss it. I’m sure you will have a great time!

  31. Corinne Elise

Also, Capitol Hill is beautiful, but it’s high-class… The weird-er parts of town are more fun!

  32. Michelle

I lived in Copenhagen for the last half of 2011 and loved the city. I’m in Portland this summer and would love to meet up for coffee/a drink and to show you around. Feel free to email me!

Places to visit/eat/drink have probably all been mentioned in the above comments.

  33. - VooDoo Doughnuts
    - Clyde Common
    - Rogue Brewery
    - Deschutes Brewery
    - Powells Books
    - Ace Hotel
    - Brunch Box Food Truck

  34. Amelia

Portland is my home and a wonderful place for the joys of life: food, drink, natural beauty, oddities and personalities. Looking forward to seeing your photos of the journey. x

  35. That’s great you will be visiting Seattle! Sometimes the best way to get to know a city is on foot. You can internalize the vibe of a city much better when it’s just you and your feet on the pavement. The weather may be unpredictable, but it is a lovely place regardless. There are interesting characters around every bend!
There is so much to do, but I’ll try and keep it simple.

What to do: Pikes Place , Post Alley, Gum Wall
(if your into retro funky vinyl records check out Holy Cow Records inside Pike’s Place Market)
Eat: Piroshky Piroshky (Russian Bakery), the first Seattle Starbucks (for kicks and giggles)
    Vintage Shop: Le Frock
Visit my Deviant Art page if you want a sneek peak of some bits of Seattle!
Enjoy your exploration of the Emerald City. Let me know if you want to roam around the best bits of downtown!
    ~Desirae

  36. Come to our shop! It’s in Seattle. Vintage/clothing/books/wares amazing-ness. It’s called Kaleidoscope Vision on 10th st and Pike st, right in the heart of Capitol Hill. 1419 10th Ave. Hope to meet you!
